Goldfields Railway's Historic Train

Goldfields Railway Incorporated was established in 1980 to preserve the rail heritage of the local area. The Society now operates the popular tourist railway between Waihi and Waikino, catering for history buffs, railway enthusiasts and visitors to the Hauraki Rail Trail.

The 30 minute journey between Waihi and Waikino travels along the original rail bed alongside the Ohinemuri River. With its fabulous scenery, and historical mining sites, it’s a Must Do when riding the Rail Trail.

The nostalgic journey takes passengers through to Waikino at the eastern end of the spectacular Karangahake Gorge. With its links to the local Mining Industry, Goldfields Railway offers a unique experience to learn about the area’s history.

Waihi Station is the only ex New Zealand Railway site in New Zealand that still contains its original buildings. Today the buildings are classified as Category II by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

Following the expansion of the Martha Mine, Waihi in the 1900s was one of the largest boroughs in the country. Today passengers can travel the remaining 6.5km of what was the original Eastern Main Trunk Line to Waikino. This line stretched from Auckland to Taneatua south of Te Puke.

Take A Ride On The Train

Each one-way trip takes 30 minutes, with tickets available from both stations. You can charter a train for a private function, or reserve a carriage for your group. Most importantly there is a bike wagon on the train.

Stop off for a Devonshire scone at the Waikino Station Café. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the picturesque Owharoa Falls. Or relax with a glass of wine over a leisurely lunch at one of the eateries in the Gorge.

Visitors can also enjoy the fascinating sites of Victoria Battery and the Victoria Battery Train and Museum. Here you’ll find remains from what was once a vast industrial area. The cycle back is mostly flat and through farmland before finishing in historic Waihi township.

There’s a variety of ticket options available, and children under 2 travel for free. A Family pass costs $35 one way, or $55 provides a round-trip ticket for two adults and two children. Great value for families and friends seeking an extra fun adventure on this section of the Rail Trail.

Wheelchair facilities are available on request, and four legged friends are welcome on a lead. The Railway is Closed Wednesdays, but operates all other days including school holidays and Public Holidays. A Timetable & Booking information can be found here.

Most work is carried out by volunteers. Drivers, guards, and work to refurbish and repair engines and carriages. Help is needed also with gardening, car park duties, marketing, event planning and management. If you can help, complete a Volunteer Enquiry Form.
